Rivers for All
Opening up rivers for everyone
Access to nature is not equal. Many young people living with disabilities or mental ill health, and their families, face barriers that make it harder to spend time outdoors. These can include poor accessibility, limited transport, lack of clear information, or simply feeling that these spaces are not designed with them in mind.
Rivers for All is about breaking down those barriers and creating welcoming opportunities for people to experience rivers safely, confidently and on their own terms.
What we’re doing
Working across Gloucestershire, Severn Rivers Trust is delivering inclusive, river-themed workshops designed specifically with accessibility in mind. Activities include:
-
Wildlife surveys to explore the insects and species that live in healthy rivers
-
Water quality testing to help participants understand river health
-
Simple experiments and river challenges that bring river science to life
Sessions are being developed in consultation with community partners and participants to ensure they are fully accessible, supportive and enjoyable.
By facilitating positive experiences by local rivers, we aim to build confidence and connection to nature, helping people feel more comfortable visiting and enjoying green and blue spaces in their local area.
Why this work matters
Spending time in nature is strongly linked to improved mental and physical wellbeing. Yet the communities who could benefit most often face the greatest barriers to accessing these spaces.
Rivers for All aims to change that by creating opportunities that are inclusive from the start. Through supportive group sessions and practical learning, participants can build confidence outdoors and develop a sense of connection with their local river.
With the support of the Barnwood Trust, we are proud to be taking practical steps to help make rivers more accessible for everyone.
A long-term connection with nature
By introducing young people to rivers in a safe and welcoming environment, this project helps build confidence that lasts beyond the workshops themselves.
Our hope is that participants and their families will feel empowered to return to these spaces independently in the future, strengthening their connection to local rivers and the natural world around them.

Personal highlight
“We’re really excited to work with our community to take meaningful steps toward making our rivers accessible to everyone. This project has the power to unlock the benefits of time spent outdoors and by the water, creating opportunities for people who might not otherwise experience the connection and wellbeing that rivers offer.”
