Tony has worked in roles including infrastructure management, social and economic regeneration and land-use planning across a large part of England and the Welsh Marches. Alongside his law degree and postgraduate studies in environmental management, Tony was a chartered town planner until his retirement. He has served as a non-executive director or trustee in organisations including an industrial heritage museum, a city-based charity organising outdoor activities for children and a community regeneration company in a historic town on the river Severn.

For twelve years before his retirement, Tony was employed in senior roles at British Waterways, which became the Canal & River Trust, the national charity having guardianship of canals, rivers and reservoirs in England and Wales. His roles included managing the business unit responsible for the West Midlands navigable waterways, as well as involvement in developing the charity’s role when it was created in 2013. His earlier career included responsibility for planning and transport issues at the West Midlands Regional Development Agency and work on a wide range of rural regeneration programmes.

Tony is an ardent fly fisher and has roles in clubs with fishing along the Welsh border, including on the Severn and its tributaries. This has also enabled him to be involved in partnership working in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

With a keen interest in environmental management and community regeneration issues, Tony became chair of Severn Rivers Trust in early 2022. He lives in Ironbridge within sight of the river.
